Currently spending a Thursday night in sick and, as I'm listening to girls run up and down the hall getting ready to go out (bc the weekend really starts on Thursday in college), I started to think about all the strange things college life brings. A lot of these seem normal now since I've been here for over a month but trust me every freshman has those 'wtf' moments in the begining. A month might not seem like a while but since you can't retreat and hide in the comfort of your home anymore you adjust fast, real fast.
Weird Thing #1: College kids don't go out until late. Like real late.
I get texts from various fraternity socials publicizing the bar they've rented out or the party at their house that evening and at the end of every text it says "starts @ 11:45". 11:45?! My curfew for the majority of high school was midnight. Like 11:45 is when things winded down for me not just started up! After one of the first football games some of my friends and I thought we were going to roll into the victory party fashionably late. Like we even sat around and did nothing so that we could show up later. We shoot for 10:40. The party probably started at 10 right? So 40 minutes is enough time for it to get started and be in full swing by the time we get there. We show up and the bouncer won't even let us in because the party didn't actually start until 11. Yep that's right. We were 20 minutes EARLY... So all I can say is build your stamina, learn to like coffee, and don't take any classes before 10 am because college brings some late nights
Weird Thing #2: You will miss your parents
My last few months at home were spent being suffocated by last minute advice and mandatory family time from my parents. I thought I would it would be different but that I would never be longing for those moments back. Now, I can't believe how much I miss my parents. I even told girls during the first couple rounds of rush "I don't think I'll go home that much, I want to establish my life on campus first" and now I've seen my parents weekly since I left. The first several visits were them dropping off stuff I forgot but lately its been dinners, conversations about our lives, and trips home for a quick hour. I'm very fortunate because I'm going to college in my hometown so my parents are very accessible. I still find myself surprised by how excited I get when they text me and say they are on their way. You have no idea how much your parents mean in your life until you can't see them everyday.
Weird Thing#3: Dressing up for class means wearing a tennis skirt
This might be just applicable to my college, but NO ONE dresses up for class. Not even like jeans and a top. Just nike shorts, t-shirts, and even on occasion pajamas. However, if you want to impress a boy in one of your classes or something a lot of girls dress up their outfit by wearing a tennis skirt instead of nike shorts. Yes that's right tennis skirts are so freaking trendy. Something I thought only soccer moms who wanted to look athletic but really weren't wore. And the worst part is they are so freaking cute. I can't believe we didn't wear them in high school! Have to say they make you're legs look great and I definitely will be investing in a few.
Weird Thing #4: Shacking
Had to include this one because like what?? I don't even feel old enough to be a high school graduate but now we're all spending the night with boys and awkwardly darting back into our dorms at 10am the next day. When you come to college and have the experience riding up the elevator with someone just coming home from the night before don't judge them. In your mind you might be thinking "that could never be me" but one day whether your just coming back from an unexpected sleepover at your best friend's dorm (me) or you actually shacked you'll hate all those 'mhmm' looks that other girls give you.
